Evaluation Analysis
A film opening is utilized to keep the audience engaged as the scene is set to create the atmosphere of the entire film. With the gun shot sound effects we used at the beginning without revealing the identity of the person who was killed, automatically sparked interest in the film as it fits the enigma code of the film. In doing this it keeps the audience on edge and question what’s going to happen next. We used quite a popular film company as the introduction: Universal has created successful film noirs such as Black Angels, Criss cross and many more. Furthermore, this automatically gives the audience a basic idea of what the film is going to be about. Before filming the opening I had to watch other film noir clips in order to fully get an idea of the conventions and codes I would have to use for our film and also do a bit of research myself. Additionally, this helped, as I was able to include the basic mise-en-scene such as costume for the characters, femme fatal and lighting. But because most of the times we’d film outside and it was sunny, the lighting was mainly natural throughout the opening but we could’ve used this to our advantage and have tried to include more shadows in the variety of shots applied.
In doing this project I’ve learnt how to use a variety of angle shots, sizes and movements. But the most effective ones we used for example, was a tilt movement and a close up on the femme fatal (child version). We also had an extreme close up on her putting lipstick on as it meets the film noir cinematography requirements. In using the high angle shot highlights the enemy’s inferiority. In filming a noir, mise-en-scene is an important element so I had to research this in depth in order to know how I would have to apply it in the film to be suitable, it was quite helpful although we weren’t always able to film as we’d forget costume or props at times. Also, we would have to re-film a scene, as we didn’t give a good knowledge on what a good location would be for the film. Before starting the film, I didn’t quite grasp the idea of editing so I found it quite difficult and it took a while to finish with it. It was worth it though as I can now edit using a green screen and the general basic editing. It was important to find sounds that go well with the genre so it wouldn’t look ridiculous. I genuinely feel as if the skill I’ve developed in doing this film opening is team work, I rarely do group work projects so this was still new to me. I had to learn how to come to an agreement even if I didn’t agree with a certain suggestion, in addition, working well with others. One of the very successful shots we used was the tilt which was effective in the opening scene as it was one of the first shot we've used. Additionally things could have been done better if only we followed through with the script and made sure it made sense before filming so we wouldn't be stuck or confused on what to do. To sum it up, it was success as we did manage to get it all done in the end after all the complication we had to go through.
The primary audience who would be interested in the film would be older adults and fans of 1940s film. Besides, the secondary audience would be fans of thrillers as its similar to noir. They would be interested in the film as it contains conventions of the film noir. Overall our film was successful in terms of including enigma code as it attracted the audience as well as the variety of cinematography. What could’ve been done better for our film is that we could’ve chosen a better setting and had better props. But in conclusion it was productive.
